Record Pools – Are You Swimming Yet?

The winter months have hit us and unless you live in Southern California, most people aren’t swimming in open-air pools any longer.

Until recent times, Indie Artists and the labels they set up for themselves had a hard time getting their music heard by anyone outside their own backyard pool of fans. With guerilla marketing finally becoming common practice and online music stores becoming a main stay for the music aficionado, record pools are now open for business to the general indie population.

What is a record pool? Basically, a record pool is a membership of DJ’s that act as an intermediary between DJ’s and the music makers. The power behind a record pool is that it can reach a mass, global market in lightening speed.

As of 2005, there are over 7000 DJ’s and industry professionals who are part of this digital revolution. In order for a DJ to belong to a record pool, they must pay a monthly association fee to obtain the latest and most current music.

Frequently this music is available to them before it becomes available to mainstream radio, and because of that, record pools quite often have more of an initial impact than the popular mainstream outlets.

The power radio programmers have over radio, clubs and street music is now handed over to the DJ’s who participate in the record pools, allowing them to have control over what they “break.”

So how can you get an invitation to swim in their pool? No invitations necessary, but you must have a good professional product that is available in digital format (although I did find one that accepted vinyl).

Some of the record pools now require that you have your own label, meaning that you don’t submit as your band name. That is easily done by setting up your own label (too much information to go into here, but you can find the information inside my book The Indie Guide to Music, Marketing and Money).

Once you have the business side taken care of, start searching the internet using the keywords, “record pool,” and then contact them to be certain that your style of music is part of their repertoire.

Don’t randomly send out your online or hard copy press kit to every record pool you find, just as you wouldn’t send your music to every station you discover. E.g., a country record pool isn’t interested in acid rock and a classical record pool won’t be interested in spinning a blue grass tune. Then begin to submit your CDs using the contact information you acquired. Do you homework and beware of companies that don’t post charts or may be music collectors.

Here are a few record pools I found on the web:

http://www.americanrecordpool.com (they represent an assortment of music, including R&B, Hip-Hop and Dance.)
http://www.keystonespinners.com (they represent Hip Hop, Latin, World and Jazz)
http://www.recordpools.com (they represent Dance, Hip Hop, and Latin)

The time for indie artists is upon us, but you better take advantage of record pools now, before someone puts a “no swimming without a lifeguard” sign out. Copyright 2006

Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The “classics” here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs’ “Foggy Mountain B…

Hugh Masekela recorded for a series of American labels between the mid-’60s and mid-’70s: Mercury; MGM; Decca’s Uni subsidiary; and his own Chisa label, distributed first by Motown and then by Blue Thumb. All of those labels have since been incorporated within the major label Universal, and Universal’s reissue arm, Hip-O, is responsible for this collection, part of the discount-priced best-of series 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection. Masekela scored a surprise number one hit in 1968 with the instrumental “Grazing in the Grass,” and that, of course, leads off the album. Although he turned out to be essentially a one-hit wonder, two of his other singles chart entries, a cover of Jimmy Webb’s Fifth Dimension hit “Up, Up and Away” and the original composition “Riot,” are also included. The rest of the 64-minute disc contains key album tracks from the pop chart LPs Hugh Masekela’s Latest, Hugh Masekela Is Alive and Well at the Whiskey, The Promise of a Future, Masekela, and I Am Not Afraid. In addition to his treatments of American pop songs (“You Keep Me Hangin’ On”), Masekela ranges from contemporary jazz styles to traditional South African sounds. The album is a good sampler of his work during his most popular period as a recording artist, 1966-1974. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

Maria Thompson Daviess (1872-1924) was an American artist and author. She was born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, to an upper-middle-class family. Before she was eight years old both her sister and her father died and her mother moved the family to Nashville. Beginning as an artist she eventually developed an interest in literature and soon focused almost exclusively on writing. She wrote thirteen novels and an autobiography during her fifteen-year career. Her most famous novel, Miss Selma Lue (1909), typifies her style of what some have called ‘excessive optimism’. As Daviess wrote her novels, she usually adapted them for the stage. Her novel, Phyllis (1914) played in Boston and was even optioned for a film, although it was never actually produced. She was a strong proponent of women’s suffrage and this was often reflected in her works. Her autobiography, Seven Times Seven (1923) was written while she was suffering from severe articular rheumatism which eventually claimed her life.

Excerpt: The Wilton Diptych (c. 139599) is a small portable diptych of two hinged panels, painted on both sides. It is an extremely rare survival of a late Medieval religious panel painting from England. The diptych was painted for King Richard II of England who is depicted kneeling before the Virgin and Child in what is known as a votive portrait. The painting is an outstanding example of the International Gothic style, and the nationality of the unknown artist is probably French or English. It belongs to the National Gallery, London. The left inside panelThe Wilton Diptych is painted on two panels of Baltic oak, set in frames of the same material and joined by two hinges so that it may be closed to protect the inner painting. The inner faces of the panels are in excellent condition for their age, though some glazes have been lost, but the outer faces have paint losses from handling. The painting is in tempera, the ground paint being mixed with egg white and laid in thin glazes. The background and many details are inlaid with gold leaf and in places the panel has been tooled beneath the gilding to enhance the decorative quality. In the panel with the Virgin and Christ Child, the garments are universally blue, the pigment coming from the semi-precious stone lapis lazuli. Richard’s robe uses vermilion, another expensive pigment. Some colours have faded; the roses in the angels’ hair would originally have been a much deeper pink, and the green grass of the outer hart panel is now much darker than when painted. Though the figures of the two inner scenes face each other, and interact by gaze and gesture, they are set in different backgrounds. The human figures are on bare rocky ground, with a forest behind, and a gold leaf “sky” decorated with a pattern … More:
