 An Introduction to Chicago Blues

An Introduction to Chicago Blues

$12.99

The golden era of Chicago blues in the 1950s and early ’60s came when the music was still essentially a powerful re-creation of the older Mississippi blues styles all done up with electric guitars, amps, and decent microphones. This was before the Chicago blues became codified by collectors and academics into its own subgenre, and tracks like Elmore James’ “Dust My Broom” (included here in a live version) with its explosive slide riff are clearly the Delta blues on rocket fuel, and there’s no denying the power of this stuff. This odd assortment of sides, many of them live performances, actually does a pretty good job of showing the diversity that lurks inside what is known as the Chicago blues, ranging in feel from Sunnyland Slim’s wonderful piano romp “It’s You Baby” to Big Joe Williams’ ragged “Baby Please Don’t Go,” presented here in a foot-stomping acoustic version. Other highlights include a live take from Otis Rush of his signature “I Can’t Quit You Baby,” Mighty Joe Young’s subtle (and then not so) topical lament “Hard Times (Follow Me),” the blasting slide guitar of Elmore James on the aforementioned “Dust My Broom,” and Muddy Waters’ “(I’m Your) Hoochie Coochie Man.” A fun and revealing set, full of a kind of joyous energy (even if it’s the blues) that seems to go missing in much of what passes these days as the blues. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

 At His Best: Live

At His Best: Live

$17.98

Atlanta’s Landslide label only released two of Sean Costello’s four albums during his life, but has been the most aggressive at maintaining, and perhaps even elevating, his profile in the blues world with two posthumous collections. The first wrapped up some previously recorded tracks, both studio and live, with a smattering of rare material. This is the second and, as the title specifies, it captures Costello on-stage with 18 heretofore unavailable-on-CD performances. The audio varies wildly from near professional quality to what sounds like a pretty good cassette recording at Buddy Guy’s Legends club, but the playing is uniformly supercharged. Costello, who passed away on the eve of his 29th birthday in 2008, had toured relentlessly and really was at his best in front of an audience as these recordings, grabbed from 2000-2007 but never intended for release, clearly show. Along with his blistering blues guitar as evidenced on “T-Bone Boogie” and Magic Sam’s “All Your Love,” Costello loved soul and funk, and half of this collection features his versions of relatively obscure R&B material that feels as natural as the more rootsy Chicago blues he’s best known for. Covers of Bobby Womack’s “Check It Out,” the Tyrone Davis classic “Can I Change My Mind,” and Johnnie Taylor’s “Doing My Thing” crackle with tough, occasionally playful energy and enthusiasm. Blues fans naturally gravitate to Costello’s reverential yet fluid guitar work, but these songs show him to be a riveting singer with a gruff voice that sounded far older than his birth year would indicate. When he lets loose on Johnny Guitar Watson’s “Motor Head Baby,” he sounds possessed and his workout on Robert Ward’s “Peace of Mind” takes the original and shoots it full of adrenaline with a guitar solo that’s tense and brittle. He even gives the great Mike Bloomfield a run for his money when he tackles Bloomfield’s “You’re Killing My Love,” a tune he likely learned from Otis Rush’s version, and u…

 Black Magic

Black Magic

$12.98

This album’s color cover photo is an action shot, showing Magic Sam in the process of choking and bending his strings, a good hike up the fretboard. It isn’t clear exactly what he is playing from the picture, although that certainly didn’t stop dozens of pimply hippie guitar players from trying to figure it out. In the meantime, the record goes on and the first soloist out of the gate is Eddie Shaw, playing tenor sax. He is blowing over the top of an R&B riff that, although not out of the syntax of Chicago blues, would also have been quite fitting on a Wilson Pickett record. It is unfortunate that Magic Sam’s recording career came to such an abrupt end, as he was one of the best artists working in the musical area between the urban blues tradition and newly developing soul music forms. This fusion was on the minds of many blues artists during the late ’60s, and not just because it was aesthetically conceivable. It was also a matter of commerce, as audiences — particularly black audiences — didn’t want to hear any blues that sounded too much like something their parents might have listened to. The harmonica player Junior Wells was another one who decided to get a bit of James Brown into his act, not always with great results. What listeners have here, on the other hand, is frankly delicious, the results of the surplus of talent Magic Sam possessed, a triple threat as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Yet with all this talent, the label should also get some credit. This period of the Delmark discography set a high standard for blues recordings, the sound quality and tight interplay among the musicians every bit the equal of the classic jazz recordings on labels such as Blue Note and Prestige. There is nothing fancy about the production, and no gimmicks. It is just a great band, allowed to play the music exactly the way it wanted to. The musicians have obviously worked together a great deal and either had these arrangements down cold from live gigs or had plent…

Buddy's Baddest: The Best Of Buddy Guy

Buddy’s Baddest: The Best Of Buddy Guy

$11.98

Buddy Guy revitalized his career when he signed with Silvertone Records in the early ’90s. His first album for the label, Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues, was a smash success, earning critical acclaim, awards, and sales hand over fist. Prior to that record, he was a legend only among blues fans; afterward, he was a star. Although it was a bit too rock-oriented and slick for purists, Damn Right was a terrific album, setting the pace not only for Guy but for modern electric blues in the ’90s. As the decade wore on, Guy continued to make albums for Silvertone, some of them a little complacent, others quite excellent. Buddy’s Baddest: The Best of Buddy Guy attempts to summarize those years in 14 songs, including three previously unreleased cuts. Not surprisingly, the compilers favor the Guy of Damn Right, featuring four songs from the record and three from its soundalike sequel, Feels Like Rain. Only two tracks from Slippin’ In, his hardest blues record for the label, made the cut, while the fine live album Live! The Real Deal and the misguided Heavy Love are represented by a track apiece. In other words, a lot of good stuff remains on the original albums, which is doubly unfortunate since the three unreleased cuts are all throwaways. By relying so heavily on two records, Buddy’s Baddest doesn’t wind up being an accurate portrait of Guy’s Silvertone recordings. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad listen, since the first ten songs are all very good and quite entertaining. However, anyone who has Damn Right but wants to dig deeper into Guy’s Silvertone albums may prefer to pick up Feels Like Rain, which offers more of the same crossover Chicago blues, or Slippin’ In, which is the real deal. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
