Names Of Blues Music

What are some blues “songsters” that I should listen to?
I really want to learn more about old southern Blues Music. I know a few names, like Son House, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Willie Johnson, and Bessie Smith, but I’d like to expand my knowledge of this genre. I want to listen to the real stuff from the beginnings of this style. I want to listen to the real blues. Any suggestions on who to listen to? Thanks!
oh, and I forgot earlier!~ what’s the best online place to listen to these songs?
Mississippi John Hurt
Charley Patton
Skip James
Pink Anderson
Reverend Gary Davis
Robert Wilkins (also known as Reverend Robert Wilkins)

Also check out Paul Geremia – he is without a doubt the best country blues fingerpicker alive today. He plays a lot of the old stuff putting his own twist on it, and also his own original music.

35 Years of Stony Plain $20.98 Founded by Holger Petersen in 1976, the independent Canadian label Stony Plain Records has devoted itself to what it defines as roots music: folk, country, and blues, along with related subgenres. 35 Years of Stony Plain is a two-CD, one-DVD set chronicling the label’s history, with tracks actually going back more than ten years prior to its formation (a quartet of previously unreleased Robert Nighthawk performances from 1965). But that is not to say that it provides a balanced sampling of Stony Plain recordings over three-and-a-half decades, nor is it intended to. In fact, the label issues this sort of compilation every five years, so this one is, naturally, tipped heavily toward what has come out since 2006. And that’s quite a batch of material. It includes the work of flagship artists like Maria Muldaur and Ian Tyson, as well as some brand names the label has had the chance to distribute in Canada, including Steve Earle, Asleep at the Wheel, Emmylou Harris, and Rodney Crowell. Sadly, the five-year period also marked the death of guitarist Jeff Healey, who is remembered by both audio tracks and a video tribute. These artists are featured on the first disc, dubbed “Singers, Songwriters and Much, Much More? .” The second disc, “Blues, R&B, Swing, Jazz and Even More? ” also includes Healey, as well as Stony Plain’s blues main man Duke Robillard, Rory Block, Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters, Long John Baldry, and the trio effort the Amos Garrett, Doug Sahm, and Gene Taylor Band. The DVD is a video scrapbook also featuring a tour of the Stony Plain offices and interview with Petersen, as well as a collection of music videos. The result is a thorough look at Stony Plain Records’ ambitions and accomplishments over the 35 years, with special emphasis on the last five. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |

A Tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe: Shout, Sister $16.98 This tribute to the underrated gospel/soul/blues guitar-playing star of the ’40s (and later, when she was rediscovered in the ’60s) is a labor of love from MC Records label owner Mark Carpentieri and singer Maria Muldaur. It was Carpentieri’s concept, but Muldaur — a huge Tharpe fan — had the industry connections and clout to recruit some of the marquee names. The disc’s title refers not only to Tharpe’s song, but to the predominantly all-female cast who cover 17 tracks associated — but not necessarily written by — the gospel/soul singer. Production is shared by Muldaur along with Carpentieri, and the classy cast, which includes Rory Block, Tracy Nelson, Odetta, Joan Osborne, Michelle Shocked, and Phoebe Snow — often singing with each other — does a terrific job interpreting these tunes. Almost all of the participants have performed spiritual and secular material, so their connection to Tharpe, who was similarly inclined, is obvious. The fabulous Holmes Brothers add brotherly gospel harmonies to Osborne’s sensational “Nobody’s Fault but Mine,” Victoria Williams’ “My Lord & I,” and Phoebe Snow’s “Beams of Heaven.” The arrangements are generally stripped down, like Michelle Shocked’s haunting “Strange Things Happening Every Day.” But horns bring a ’40s jump blues feel to the title track, which features dazzling vocals from Muldaur, Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli, and Tracy Nelson harmonizing on the chorus and swapping verses. The last three, along with the horns, also contribute to a frisky “I Want a Tall Skinny Papa” (“He’s gotta be tall/And that ain’t all”), clearly one of Tharpe’s secular tracks. There isn’t a weak cut here, with all the women contributing fiery performances that will hopefully spur a major label to release a comprehensive Tharpe career overview and encourage listeners to search out original recordings from the singer. The disc appropriately closes with “Didn’t It Rain,” a track sung by Marie Knight, Tharpe’s duet partner. It’s … |

Best of Merle Haggard [Capitol 2009] $9.99 As early as 1972, Merle Haggard hits albums bore titles that cracked jokes at the use of “best” in their names — Truly the Best of Merle Haggard and The Best of the Best of Merle Haggard being his second two compilations — so way down the line in 2009, after decades of albums called “The Best” and just three years after Capitol put out an excellent, generous single-disc called Hag: The Best of Merle Haggard, the label has stripped down to barebones for 2009′s The Best of Merle Haggard. The set is as basic as its title: just 10 tracks, all hits, packaged in a thin “eco-friendly” sleeve that feels like an advertisement for its accompanying digital download version. The song selections ever so slightly favor ’70s material, with “Soldier’s Last Letter” and “Everybody’s Had the Blues” standing in for “The Bottle Let me Down” and “Sing Me Back Home,” which may feel a bit off to some tastes, but everything here is superb, so it’s a worthwhile sampler even if 2006′s Hag paints a fuller, richer picture. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |
